Alopecia Areata is a somewhat rare condition that causes the hair on the scalp or elsewhere on the body to fall out in patches. Alopecia Totalis results in complete hair loss on the scalp, while Alopecia Universalis causes total hair loss on the body. Although the hair can grow back, it may continue to fall out for years at a time. This is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the immune system attacks the hair follicle structres, resulting in the hair falling out. Most people who suffer from forms of Alopecia are otherwise healthy individuals. There is no cure for Alopecia, however treatment at Dr. Jeff Alexander’s Dermatology Clinic can help hair re-grow more quickly. Treatment options include Corticosteroids, Minoxidil, Anthralin and Diphencyprone.
