Hives are small, itchy welts on the skin often brought on by allergy or a number of other causes. Although a single hive often fades after 24 hours, new hives usually pop up in its place and can continue to spread for weeks at a time. Acute cases of hives last no longer than six weeks, and after that they are considered chronic hives. Severe cases of hives, such as those brought on by an allergic reaction, should be brought to the attention of emergency medical care immediately for treatment.
