Vitiligo is an unpredictable skin condition in which normal skin color is lost in large patches. It occurs when melanin cells, the cells responsible for hair, skin and eye color, die or stop working correctly and pigmentation is lost in blotches. Although it may be more noticeable among individuals with darker skin, vitiligo can affect anyone and may manifest itself on any part of the body. While the effects of vitiligo are not dangerous or contagious, they are often permanent and can have negative effects on patient’s self esteem in their daily life.
